Yep, Sitepoint have some great Javascript books (see previous posts) and they also have a book on JQuery (JQuery: Novice to Ninja) which I think you can grab a PDF of for $10 at the moment.

They also have a Javascript course - which is really good.

Vern is correct - you will need some knowledge of CSS to get to grips with JQuery. I also recommend that you get a basic knowledge (at least) of CSS before starting Javascript - since a lot of what you will be doing with Javascript is manipulating CSS values.

Good free IDEs for Windows (most of them cover HTML, CSS and Javascript) are HTML-Kit (my favorite for Windoze) and Kompozer. In Ubuntu there is Bluefish. And, if you happen to be using PHP on the i, Zend Studio will also fit.

I am ashamed to admit that I have done very little JavaScript development
and thus have avoided it as long as I could. Now one almost has to know
JavaScript to do any amount of web development.
