Hence the dis portion of Passport Advantage. I shudder to think about what will happen if/when OS licenses are obtained there. ESS is a pain to be sure, but that other garbage is 1000% worse.

But you won't always get your product either Jim. Still waiting for an issue to be resolved on a license of RDi that I bought two weeks ago!

IBM assigns all those wonderful customer numbers, not the actual customer.
There is some arcane set of rules about how they are created so if the
BP, or distributor, or the wind blows a new customer number gets created.

Now with passport (dis)Advantage if you manage to log on and renew there,
you won’t wind up with another customer number, but that is one of the few
instances.

Hey Darryl ,

What do you mean by “IBM” in this case? Technical support, sales, or
what? Lots of different channels that do their own thing.

Customers frequently seem to not reuse their customer number so end up
with a plethora. Entitlements are generally by customer number or machine
serial from what I see. The entity that is most likely to know would be
the channel that you bought it though (business partner, sales rep,
Passport Advantage, software reseller, …). And on top of that some
resellers seem to have their name on the entitlement or the entitlement was
purchased then the company name changed or the company was taken over by
another. So you can understand that when some new-hire calls in looking to
see if their new company has entitlement to RDI that they are told was
purchased in 2012 but don’t know how then things can be un-findable. 😉

So, in most cases it is the customer that has the best knowledge about how
to find their entitlement.

That said, I did recently track down a customer’s entitlement based on a
purchase request sent to some ISV in 2017 – the ISV was really
understanding when I contacted them. With today’s privacy rules they could
have just told me to get lost. Some days are “interesting” and I got lucky
that time, other days are not as successful but we do what we can.

I am trying to find out what type of licenses we have. IBM is not very good
at helping track this info down.
