Not tied to a single system Craig - I use it with about 4 or 5 different
systems each month. It is available on a regular software license - just be
sure to buy the version that allows you to purchase annual support - not
the cheaper one-time-only cost (unless you plan to retire in a year or two
anyway).

Price in the UK appears to be just under 900 pounds. You want the
Authorized User" version. https://www.ibm.com/uk-en/marketplace/rational-
developer-for-i <https://www.ibm.com/uk-en/marketplace/rational-
developer-for-i> Sadly IBM UK seem to apply the model used m=by many
companies in the UK - i.e. take the US price and switch the $ sign to a
pound sign. The maintenance you'll have to check but it is normally in the
25% of current price range.

Brian Parkins is an RDi user in the UK - maybe he can comment further on
pricing options/differences there.

That's interesting Jon,

I'm not sure if the pricing is the same in the UK, but if it's of that
order of magnitude I'd certainly be interested.
As a contractor I usually have to make do with whatever my clients are
using.

Without my own AS/400 - is there a way I can purchase it for myself?
Will it be tied into a particular IBMi?

thanks and regards,
Craig

As you know Darryl I am in a small shop. I pay for RDi. It is a
business
expense and worth every cent. The price is $200 per year (not the $1,000
you stated) after you have paid the $1,000 or so for the initial
license.

There are at least two "RDi lite" alternatives available if you don't
want
to pay IBM. Liam Allan's is free (https://github.com/
WorksOfBarry/ILEditor

MiWorkplace is about $40 (https://miworkplace.com/ <

From my point of view, a small shop with 1 or 2 developers, the cost is
pretty steep. The old model linking to the model size really worked for
me.
So the price was low for P05 systems and affordable. With the current
pricing by IBM, I am at an extreme cost disadvantage at a cost of $1,000
per year plus per seat. This is the same cost as the big systems pay.

Everyone and IBM wonder why nobody wants to pay for RDI especially
small
shops and individuals. Students coming out of college cannot afford to
gain
entry to the IBM i space.....

Microsoft has the visual studio that anyone can download and use. It
does not have all the functionality but you can begin developing at a
low
cost.

RDi needs a similar offering. To grow the system, you need the college
kids have free/cheap access to the IBM i.
