The missing hyperlink behaviour in 9.6 is enough to make me go back to
using my 9.5 for now.

Forgive my ignorance, but...

Is APAR SE68743 text fix just a client-side patch to RDi that I can request
myself ( as an independent contractor without my own IBMi )

Or do I need to involve my client and get him to request a PTF or some
server side change?
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "ask IBM Service for it"

thanks kindly,
Craig

Hi Vern
I suspect you are hitting APAR SE68743 where hyperlink no longer works for
SQLRPGLE members as of 9.6.0.1
There is a test fix available for this APAR if you find this annoying and
want to ask IBM Service for it.

So you're saying if you have 20 developers you only need to purchase a
single RDI license because IBMi can single thread compiles. What ?

Show me that in the license agreement 😊

When you say FREE VS limits you to a single compiler, what are you
referring to ?

Visual Studio Community is full-fledged and includes almost all features
of Visual Studio Pro including built-in Node.Js development and all the
language compilers.

Perhaps you should do a little more research.

Yes, RDi doesn't include compilers, but you don't need as many seats as
you have developers. Most places I have worked put compiles into a single
thread queue, so you only need one seat for that. Free VS limits you to a
single compiler last I checked. Though you can download it once for each
compiler. And who says you can't build a working IBM i application with RDi?

You're not comparing apples with apples. It's been a while since I
used VS but even then it was a way more capable IDE than RDi and it

required to build complete applications. The compiler licences for IBM
i are chargeable on top of the RDi licence, which isn't much more than
a basic editor built on top of an open source platform, it doesn't
even have intellisense yet! You get no build tools whatsoever with RDi
or with the compiler licences on the server. Also there is a free
route into VS, so anyone can pick up a copy and start to write working
Windows applications.

Let's look at cost for a bit. Visual studio pro subscription costs >
$1000 per seat with a $800 renewal. Companies have no trouble paying
for that. Visual studio pro without subscription is $500 with no
published renewal price. So VS may, or may not be cheaper to start
with, but it is always more expensive long term.
