Sorry, Jon. I didn't see it that way. Cost wasn't the issue; performance was.

My own interest increased when the announcement came regarding SEU being frozen at 6.1. Since my company was moving forward to V7.1+ and there were some really good BIF's (%SCANRPL!) and other features (free H/D/F specs, **FREE, etc.) that were introduced in post-6.1 releases, the transition (for me) primarily happened when I got tired of seeing all the (false) syntax messages in SEU. The choice between NO syntax checking and false syntax errors is a "lesser of two evils" scenario that does not lead to anything productive.

I originally tried WDSC 7.0 when the conventional wisdom was that it was MUCH more stable than WDSC 6.0. The first day I tried to use/learn it, my PC (laptop with Windows XP) locked up tighter than a drum at least 5 times; I had to force shutdown and reboot EVERY time, which usually took close to 1/2 hour each time (due to recovery, I guess, and relaunching my normal applications such as Outlook, Client Access, and our Change Management application). I suppose WDSC worked acceptably well on top-of-the-line hardware, but not all of us were lucky enough to have that available. This was not even close to the "productivity gains" that were advertised, not to mention the frustration of having to regroup my thoughts after each reboot. After that first attempt, I simply gave up on WDSC until the hardware could support the requirements of WDSC. At least most of us now have sufficient hardware resources to support RDI's requirements, so that is less of an issue now.

That's the way it used to be Greg - and nobody used it. Interest increased after IBM started charging for it.

I do think it should be cheaper - but people tend to regard a free product as being worth only the money you pay.

Not to hijack, but my argument has always been that an IBM Customer should get the RPG/Cobol version when they purchase the compilers on the IBM i. At least give a fully-fucntioning, single user license.

Just sayin'.

Jon,

There is a recent post on the web posing this question: "If RDI was FREE, would you Go for A Ride? - IT Jungle"

Now, our company purchased the license over 1 decade ago, and support too.

So, it is "FREE" to our developers. They do NOT have to pay out of pocket.

And finally all developers have it loaded on their PC. And Only because it was required by Management, as employee objective to accomplish.

The Microsoft developer talk how Visual Studio is "FREE", only in the sense that they do not have to use their "PERSONAL" money. The company had to paid for it.

So, even though it was "FREE" to our developers. Only recently have we gotten all developers to at least have it loaded. I would say now approximately over 50% are using RDI full time. 35% part-time. And 15% are using it very rarely, if ever...

Typical responses "too hard to learn", I haven't attend a class, etc... Pick your excuse of the day.

Cannot stop laughing... "If RDI was FREE, would you Go for a A Ride?"... Why?
The Punch-Card-Fossils won't use it no matter what. Why argue with a Fool? Thank God some of the Punch-Card-Lovers are finally retiring.

RDI gets better with every release!!! Perfect? No, but it keeps getting better.

And I honestly cannot imagine doing my job WITHOUT RDI. I am depending on RDI, myself! Go RDI!!!! Looking forward to the next big release!

RDi is not free - period. release is irrelevant because it is not tied to a release.

You might be able to persuade your Business Partner to discount it to the point of it being "free" as part of the upgrade - but it is not free from IBM.
