Not to hijack, but my argument has always been that an IBM Customer should get the RPG/Cobol version when they purchase the compilers on the IBM i. At least give a fully-fucntioning, single user license.
Just sayin'.

Now, our company purchased the license over 1 decade ago, and support too.
So, it is "FREE" to our developers. They do NOT have to pay out of pocket.
And finally all developers have it loaded on their PC. And Only because it was required by Management, as employee objective to accomplish.
The Microsoft developer talk how Visual Studio is "FREE", only in the sense that they do not have to use their "PERSONAL" money. The company had to paid for it.
So, even though it was "FREE" to our developers. Only recently have we gotten all developers to at least have it loaded. I would say now approximately over 50% are using RDI full time. 35% part-time. And 15% are using it very rarely, if ever...
Typical responses "too hard to learn", I haven't attend a class, etc... Pick your excuse of the day.
Cannot stop laughing... "If RDI was FREE, would you Go for a A Ride?"... Why?
The Punch-Card-Fossils won't use it no matter what. Why argue with a Fool? Thank God some of the Punch-Card-Lovers are finally retiring.
RDI gets better with every release!!! Perfect? No, but it keeps getting better.
And I honestly cannot imagine doing my job WITHOUT RDI. I am depending on RDI, myself! Go RDI!!!! Looking forward to the next big release!

RDi is not free - period. release is irrelevant because it is not tied to a release.
You might be able to persuade your Business Partner to discount it to the point of it being "free" as part of the upgrade - but it is not free from IBM.
