Well they frequently have to update their tools for new technology - and do so because it makes them more efficient. They also have consumables (i.e. maintenance) in the form of blades, drill bits, new battery packs, etc.

I appreciate it is not a perfect analogy by any means. On the other hand I don't know of many carpenters that make $100 an hour which is not unheard of in the programming field.
