Just to interject my own comments here... but I've been using WDSc now for about 3 years. First for RPG development, and now for RPG AND Java development. I've had very few issues with the product once I got the hang of using it. Mind you, I'm running what I would consider a powerful PC, Dell Precision 380, with 2 gigs of ram, and a dual core processor. But I don't see that being any different than needed a larger truck to haul more goods. Yes, WDSc is somewhat bloated, but for me to be able to edit HTML, java, javascript, rpg's, cl, dds, etc all in the one user interface is quite neat. With the code assist features, help readily available, and add in the Code Repository (which we are using for Java development, not sure if that can handle anything else) it's wonderful. To be honest, if I switched jobs now and went to an employer who would refuse me the product, or refuse to buy a machine capable of it, then I'd simply bow out of accepting a position (aside from obvious reasons... government, union, etc... ;) ). If my current employer now told me I had to use a slower machine, then I'd simply say "expect less output then...". There's an old saying "takes money to make money". That's fundamentally true in the IT world. Mind you, I can't think of an editor that would allow me all these features, nor have I looked. Is there one? Not some, but all those features. From: Kaiserbladekarl Both of these books are from a Java perspective though correct? If I'm not interested in moving to Java how would they help me use WDSC with RPG?
WDSC: Step by Step will walk you through not only the Java side but also the RPG side of WDSC. It's not in-depth, but it's enough to get past the initial hurdle.
My "scare tactics" are no more than telling you what IBM has been saying: the development dollars for tools will be pushed to WDSC rather than SEU.Great! then where are the goodies?
I can't even imagine what you mean by this. WDSC is an incredible tool with tons of goodies. It just doesn't have YOUR particular goodie.
I don't get to pick the machine I'm given. A small handicap for those who work for someone other than themselves. And how do I justify a new computer when the one I've been using for three yars will allow me to work fine AND WDSC is still not complete?
If you (or your employer) can't afford a $700 PC, then you need to stick with SEU.
Heck, none of the green screen diehards would even use WDSC, so why do you think IBM would bother creating an SDA replacement?None of them? Are there stats to back this up or are you using hyperbole? I know plenty of green screen diehards who would use WDSC if it were usable.
When WDSC first came out, there was (and still is) huge pushback from the green screen developers community.
AND IT'S ALL FREE.Free? Please. Like roads are free and police protection is free. It gets paid for its just a matter of how.
Ah, nevermind. Joe
