It has been a while since I looked at it, but you really can do it through
A/P if it is considered to be "de minimis" (excuse the spelling).  That is,
if the 'gift' value is insignificant, you can get away with not taking tax
out of it.  If memory serves me correctly, they usually look the other way
if the amount is less than $25 per employee and it is a once a year
occurrence.

That said, I highly recommend going through Payroll.  Then you don't have
to worry about meeting the IRS 'test'.  Hopefully your payroll system has a
gross-up feature that allows you easily end up at the amount you seek on
the checks.
