Is a second small server for testing not a cost effective option for most companies? We have set up 2 different test environments: TSP (production test environment - which mimics live environment) and TSD (development test environment which contains changes & fixes for testing). We have set up separate user profiles to access the test environments and we have written programs to populate the test files with cut down copies of the live files using CPYF. Care needs to be taken that there is no activity on the live system when the test system is re-generated - otherwise the invoice & order numbers get out of sync. This was quite labour-intensive to set up, but it works well.
