I spent a 10+ year spell with IBm and other employers before them basically based on asking for forgiveness - not permission Jim.

As another poster indicated - you are being paid to bring your expertise and good judgement to a job. So do that. If the "company: does not agree with the results then perhaps it is time to move on.

No argument with your sentiment at all, except that the guy with the signature on the lower right corner of the check you get periodically gets to decide, however short sighted it is. So the developers choice is unemployment/move to another job, or do as instructed.

I know IBM will never do this for a variety of very good reasons, but the only way to force it is to stop shipping/supporting the old compilers forcing everyone to the newest version available on that OS VRM.
