- the "U" in column 23 assumes a Data Area Data Structure and reads in the *DTAARA ADS at the start of the program - no need for DEFINE or IN.

The equivalent free format would look like:

     Dcl-DS ADS EXTNAME('FILE') Dtaara(*Auto) End-DS;


Brian, that would make the program behave differently. It would be equivalent to IN *LOCK at the beginning of the program and OUT at the end. Shane's program was just doing an IN, without lock and without any change of the data area.
