You're right, Jon, you should check %ERROR after using (E).

Here's the code I meant to recommend, without any (E). (E) would handle all errors, and this code is only intended to loop for lock errors.

ok = *off;
dow not ok;
monitor;
reade key file; // no (E) extender
ok = *on;
on-error 1218: // record lock
// try again
endmon;
enddo;
