I did the following and it seemed to work fine.

dcl-ds ADS ExtName('FILE") Qualified Dtaara('ADS') end-ds;

One thing to remember if you were to try to do it the other way.

Make the template file a template. No reason to declare storage you are not
going to use for anything.

dcl-ds TD_FILE ExtName('FILE') Qualified Template end-ds;

Qualified is not required. I just always us qualified unless I have
specific reason to not use it like:

dcl-ds *n;
*n Char(3) Inz('Jan');
*n Char(3) inz('Feb');
etc
MonthAbbr Char(3) Dim(12) Pos(1);
end-ds;

MyMonthAbbr = MonthAbbr(x);

Is this cleanest solution?

We have many program that use basically this in fixed format...

D ADS EUDS EXTNAME(FILE)
C *DTAARA DEFINE ADS
C UNLOCK ADS
C IN ADS

It is a Data Area Data structure 'ADS' that uses the structure of the
'File'.

How do I duplicate this with Free specs?

-----------------------
This is what I came up with....

Dcl-Ds FILE_DS EXTNAME('FILE') INZ;
End-Ds;

Dcl-Ds ADS DTAARA('ADS');
DSDS like(FILE_DS);
End-Ds;

In ADS;
FILE_DS = ADS;

FILE_DS is now populated with the values with the data area data structure
'ADS'. My original question was how do I do this in Free. Now I guess,
is this right/best/cleanest way?
