I agree with James Lampert. Do not ignore the cycle. I agree that in
"most" current applications, it is not utilized. However, when
producing reports or PDFs with subtotals, the cycle can't be beat.

I'm not getting invovled in a holy way, but... I recently had to
write a non-cycle RPG program with multiple levels of subtotalling. I can
tell you that there were times I wished I could have written it to use the
cycle, instead. However, in this case the program also had to dynamically
determine what those multiple levels of subtotalling were going to be --
i.e., there are processing options associated with the program that allows
the requesting user to specify what the sort order for the report is going
to be (and, hence, what the subtotalling levels will be). Now, I don't
think you can have different subtotal leveling controlled by the cycle.
