Buck has presented several answers - there basically are, IMO, no unanswered costs or questions.

Let's say you get the authorized user version - probably should be the most common, Personally I've not figured out the benefit of the floating license, and the fixed, 1-year thing is hard for me to find a need for. I am confident that you shouldn't used fixed term for continuous use - authorized user license beats cost of fixed when you've paid for the 2nd year, as I recall. I have run the numbers - fixed is less per year, it is 835 right now = this includes S & M - safe-for-work kind, please! Cost for 2 years is 1670, which includes the next 835 you pay after 1 year. Even if we said 25% S & M for the authorized user and you paid full price, cost for 2 years is 1288, again, this is how much you will have paid by the end of the first year - you are already ahead of the game.

But we're talking authorized user.

1. You pay the up front cost - or your employer does - this is 1030 USD now - I posted it earlier in this thread - this includes a year of support & maintenance
2. You pay maintenance annually after the first year, to the tune of maybe 20% full retail cost - pretty standard rate these days
3. If you stop paying support, you can still use the product indefinitely. You will not be able to get updates of major versions and will not be able to get support from IBM. (you can still ask questions at MIDRAMGE, of course - sometimes you get what you paid for!!)

These bits of information are easily found and calculated - I don't know that this represents a lack of information on the part of decision makers, if they want to put in a miniscule level of effot.

Enough, eh>

The cost seems to be a factor. What is the cost? A thousand dollars one-time cost? Is there an annual maintenance fee? What happens if maintenance is dropped?

Lots of unanswered costs about the real cost of RDi. Yet decisions are being made based on the lack of information.

That seems odd, especially among this group.

Yowsa! Guys, any contribution I had to this little flare up, I apologize for.

I do think that some of us are overemphasizing RDI, and more, that RDI at least appears to be an unreasonable financial cost for many small shops. Or rather, has been. And I also tend to agree it is not as much of a productivity enhancer as some here think. Don’t forget how disruptive it can be to learn, and what happens when you hit a shop that doesn’t have it or won’t allow it?

All the same, I often use it. :)
