I personally found the technique (on the /36) to be quite elegant; easy to implement and very flexible. If you wanted to process multiple ranges of records (e.g. reprinting invoices), that was pretty much easiest way to do it. All it took to retrofit an existing program was adding 2 lines (an F and E spec) and a small modification to an F spec.

The selection logic was usually encapsulated in a separate process, giving even more flexibility. Contrast that with dynamically building an SQL or OPNQRYF statement, or even worse, FMTDTA!
