I think the original reason back in RPG III times was that the
names of the lookahead fields have to be unique. The external names
would have already been used on the regular I specs and the compiler
would have had to somehow create new names for the lookahead fields.
Well, couldn't that just have been handled the same way you rename a field
from an external format, even under RPG III?
In my experience with look-ahead fields in the 70's, you typically only
cared about a few fields at most and only list them under the ** I-spec, not
the whole record format. Why couldn't the field rename columns be used to
supply the new name?
I'm sure the point is moot now -- if you asked how much of a hyphothetical
$100 budget people would spend on adding look ahead field support RPG/ILE, I
suspect you'd get very few votes.
