That's a good point.
I can't guess at any other possible reasons for disallowing it. It's
possible that "they" had the same thinking as I just did.
At this stage it probably doesn't matter anymore. There would be little
demand for adding look ahead support for externally described files under
ILE. I just always found the limitation curious even in RPG III, and
couldn't think of why it would not have been supported originally. I
figured the field rename was easily handled, so didn't consider that to be a
primary reason to disallow it.
More curious than anything -- I don't expect to ever see the support added
now.
