I respect your opinion, but that is the same thing we would have said in
2003 when a lot of iSeries shops were looking to get on the web. I believe
it can still happen, but I am not naïve to the fact that chances aren't
great.

people don't all upgrade the minute a new release comes out

To be blunt we currently have the wrong generation using RPG for it to take
off like we would like it. Than can change if RPG is given a new face IMO.
No one would argue that popularity can do wonders for a language. Note that
I am not slamming anyone on these lists as you are obviously not the run of
the mill RPG'r if you are taking the time to learn new things.

Perhaps more to the point - how many of the current frameworks for
PHP/Java/whatever were actually produced by the language "owner"? It seems
to me that this community is perfectly capable of developing such an
infrastructure - but whether it will or not is another issue.

Good point. It would be very interesting to see if an RPG framework could
be produced by a vendor as open source and then have them make their money
on support - Zend seems to be doing it successfully with PHP though that is
up one more level into the actual language. I wish I had a spare month or
two because I know I could put together most of an initial framework based
on bits and pieces of code I have collected over the years. Anyone want to
pay professional services $$ to have a prototyped thick client built for
their next gen app? Really, that's what could make this whole thing happen
is if a large company was willing to fund the project for their own needs
and make it open source.

The question I also have in my mind is how long would it'd be until we
reached a point in the framework building where we would REALLY like to have
some language mods to make the whole process easier (thinking about Java
Annotations and speaking to Steve's point).

Of course even if IBM developed a framework for RPG at least 75% of the
messages on this list would be about how they got it wrong <grin>

So true:-) I am sure I would be one of them... Unless of course IBM let the
community help design it - but them the community wouldn't ever be able to
make an executive/collaborative decision I am sure.

On the serious side though, if IBM were to implement some of these
features as part of the compiler it would take off much better.

Sorry Aaron but it won't help. It would take way too long to a) implement
it and b) actually get the release in the hands of the developers. You're
looking at a minimum 12 - 18 months if IBM started work tomorrow - which
they won't - and that's just to release it. As Bob is fond of pointing out,
people don't all upgrade the minute a new release comes out - so
realistically you're looking at 2 - 3 years. Can you wait that long?
