You could also write sockets programs on the iSeries and a PC, but by the
time you wrote the code from scratch you could purchase a supported product.
Note that Microsoft recommends against this environment as Office can have
unpredictable results. Office wasn't meant to be run in a "server" scenario
and we have found that to be very true. We built a .NET web service that
receives in an Office document that was uploaded from a users machine and
converts it to PDF. This becomes problematic when Word locks up or too many
threads get going in Task Manager. We worked through all of the yuck yuck
and finally have it working, but like I said, Microsoft recommends against
it and after being through what we have I can see why :-) Note that Office
12 (I believe it is called) doesn't have the "server" limitation as I
understand it.
Another FREE option would be to write RPG or Java code to create an XML
formatted MS Word document using the new Open Document Format.
Probably the best option. Does Microsoft still support this standard or did
they just support it initially (to get their face in the press) and then
drop it once it had served its purpose?
That's all I have...

Actually there are tools that let you talk directly to MS Word from an RPG
or CL program.
Our iSeries Office Integrator product is one such offering, although it is a
commercial product.
Check out our web site for more info on the iSeries Office Integrator. You
can request a FREE demo.

David,
There is no way (that I know of) that RPG can talk to Word. What you can
do is create a file and open it with Word. Problem is that .doc is a
proprietary format, so it is not feasible to create a .doc file from RPG
(there is an open source project for accessing Office documents, especially
spreadsheets, with Java, about which Scott Klement has written a lot, but
the Word part of it does not seem to be very useful).
But you can create a .html document (e.g. with CGIDEV2) and open it with
Word. Another option is .rtf (Rich Text Format), but HTML is much better
documented.
If you must do anything with Word, you'll have to program on the PC side.
You could use MS Access, create an ODBC link and program in Visual
Basic. You can access Word and its object model from VB.
