Speaking as one who thinks that he understands it but doesn't use it unless
it's an existing program that needs modification I have to ask--Is it a
cycle program if LR is set on before it iterates (i.e. is it top-tested or
bottom-tested)?

You're right that if you set on LR the first time through, the cycle ends after only one iteration.

But, we're talking about the RPG Cycle, which is code that automatically gets compiled into your program (unless you specify NOMAIN). Not the more generic term of "cycling."

Without the RPG cycle, LR has no effect on your module. Without the cycle, files don't get opened for you automatically. Indeed, you really can't write a program (*PGM object) in pure RPG without including some limited use of the cycle in your program. (Though, subprocedures written in RPG can be called without any use of the RPG cycle.)

So, yes, technically you're using the cycle, though I'm probably being pedantic about it, it's the automatic reading of the primary/secondary file, the looping of the C spec, and the automatic writing of the detail/total time output that you're avoiding, not the cycle itself.
