Dave, even a bottom tested program without a primary file uses all the "cycle", unless you specify *nomain in an h spec. it just doesn't use it more than once. nearly all the logic inherent in the cycle is executed behind the scenes - before and after the c specs section proper. the fact that your program doesn't care has no bearing on that. but, to be clear, it's true. when people speak of the cycle, they're usually speaking of using primary files - typically with level breaks or matching records - imo, the only good reason to use primary and secondary files. for the record, i've written maybe 10 primary file programs in the last 10 years - mostly to take advantage of level breaks.
