Well, What you've said there is a give and take. That's acceptable in my opinion. You show the initiative and then the company will back you. A lot won't though, and that's where my beef really lies. I have taken some stuff home to work on, a few hours isn't bad at all. But some companies would prefer you to take an evening course for 8-10 weeks that costs you big dollars, and takes up 40-50 hours of your time, with no help from them. The give and take scenario you describe is highly acceptable. Employee shows they are willing to learn, and the employer then recognizes that. Nice touch. Your employees are lucky, much as I am myself. Ron Power Programmer Information Services City Of St. John's, NL P.O. You have no idea just how much that irks me. Ron, I understand you point of view, really. But let me take the other side. If my employees aren't willing to invest $50 for a book at barnes and noble and a few hours of time on their home PC to learn something that will help their career, why should I make that investment? The beauty of learning .NET or Java is that you can do it at home on your PC, you don't need access to an AS/400. My deal with my employees it this, "you learn a new technology, at least as far as the web and Amazon will take you on your own time and expense." If you _then_ need more detailed training I'm willing to invest, but a the old Apex Tech commercials said, "you have to take the first step." -Walden ------------ Walden H Leverich III Tech Software (516) 627-3800 x11 WaldenL@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.TechSoftInc.com Quiquid latine dictum sit altum viditur.
