Using WEA orders (Write Extended Attribute) in the 5250 data stream, I think it probably could. But I don't recall all the details on WEA, and I can't find a copy of the 5494 Functions Reference manual online anywhere in a quick search. I do remember you can set the color of each individual display byte, even within a field, without consuming display positions. I don't remember if attributes like blink or underline were part of WEA, but I suspect they were.
