The rule of "Read files, write records" is not just an RPG thing. Besides, who knows? Maybe in the future we'll wish we had the ability to have a mix of record formats in a file.

You already have the ability to define multiple record formats in a file. Consider WORKSTN files. Consider logical files defined over multiple physical files.

Mind you, the ability to allow a file to contain one record format with the same name as the file is not something we're going to jump into without a lot of thought. The implementation alternatives we know about now are all rather kludgy.

And considering that a simple RENAME keyword on the F-Spec gets around the problem, it will be hard to convince everyone here that there aren't more important things that need to be done to the language.

But the suggestion has been recorded in our list of proposed future enhancements.
