That "read a file, write a record" mantra was beaten into me during my COBOL class. However, for a single record format file I can't see what you'd be giving up. And as Bob said, you'd be gaining a feature, not losing one. If you still wanted to name your record formats differently there's nothing stopping you. And if someone named them the same, and in your RPG program you wanted to differentiate them there's nothing stopping you from using the RENAME to rename it yourself.
