To convert from numeric to character I use %Char().  To go the other way I
use a sub proc called #CtoN() which seems to be used by many so I am
guessing it is open source.  My shop just got up to V5R1 about a month ago
so I haven't investigated going from character to numeric, but I am all
ears. . .

the "proper" way of doing this. 

I am just starting to investigate the free format. I actually can't wait to

Because the free programmers think it's ugly, so you should change your
programming style.  That's the gist of the argument on this point.
