Most of the e-mail validation routines I've seen look for an '@' with at least
one '.' after it (some don't even check the '.'). The three character check
listed would fail many valid e-mail addresses. While .com, .net, and .edu are
very common for US e-mail addresses, many (if not most) non-US e-mail addresses
end in .[iso country code]. For example, you may have someone@someisp.br
(Brazil, I think) which is perfectly valid. Also, you can put an IP address in
the address (test@127.0.0.1) which is perfectly valid but would very likely
fail the test. I think that you'll find the spec to be pretty vague on what is
required beyond the '@'.

Mike,

I agree with most of your limitations, but:

>at least three characters after the '@',

Do you mean at least three characters between the @ and the period, or at least
three including the domain, period, and suffix?

While some domain registration companies insist you use at least three
characters for the domain name portion, I don't think it is a hard and fast
rule. For instance, Road Runner's cable service is rr.com
