Most of the e-mail validation routines I've seen look for an '@' with at least one '.' after it (some don't even check the '.'). The three character check listed would fail many valid e-mail addresses. While .com, .net, and .edu are very common for US e-mail addresses, many (if not most) non-US e-mail addresses end in .[iso country code]. For example, you may have someone@someisp.br (Brazil, I think) which is perfectly valid. Also, you can put an IP address in the address (test@127.0.0.1) which is perfectly valid but would very likely fail the test. I think that you'll find the spec to be pretty vague on what is required beyond the '@'.
