Believe me Dan I have written and maintained many a program using the cycle, including using level breaks, matching record processing, even display files. However, that is only because when I first started in IT, RPGIII was only just available, and a lot of code had been migrated across from System 34/36. Most of my colleagues came into IT when the AS/400 was established, and so have never had need to use or understand the cycle. Yes, you can still utilise the cycle, but when you leave, someone else has to maintain your programs. I personally find the code needed for "DIY" level breaks is so straightforward, that I never use the cycle. But as they say, there is more than one way to skin a cat!
