I have heard that Java can access the service programs or RPG programs and
pass parms to them but the Java on the 400 cannot have parms returned from
these programs. This sounds like a serious disadvantage. Does anyone know
if this is true, and if so what would be the best work around?
Also, what exactly is a class?
Thanks in advance for your help.

David, the new V5R1 RPG support goes both ways (from RPG to Java and from
Java to RPG). The Java side defines the RPG procedures as native methods
(and
that means the procedures can only be called from Java, or from RPG
programs
calling them as though they were Java methods).

Java can also call ordinary service program procedures using the toolbox.
From the Info Center, search for ServiceProgramCall. (That's available in
V4R5, maybe earlier.)
