You're reading too much into this.  Those who don't want to learn are
obvious in a shop.  They don't care about standards, but follow them.  So
these programmers who make the standards are not the same ones that just
follow them.

one of the problems with people like this is, they take the path of least
resistance skewing the view of "the team".

Hey, I just ate lunch, I don't feel like having someone stuff words into my
mouth.  <bg>.

And we're back to square one.  Why should a construction worker not use a
compound miter box because the rest of his team decided it was not a
standard tool to use?  Should he be made to always use a circular saw?
