Hello Viji,

PDM supports user-defined options but it doesn't use UIM. PDM is built
with normal display file support using subfiles and multiple record
formats. If PDM can do it then you can too!

You cannot add your own functions to IBM panels because they haven't been
designed to support that. They could, of course, but I don't see
Rochester doing that -- especially with their current love-affair with
Windoze as the AS/400 user interface. (Excuse me while I throw up.)

It is certainly possible to support user-defined options using UIM if you
take responsibility for processing the list actions in your application.
A select list could be used to check for predefined options (e.g., any
numeric options) and then call a program to handle user-defined options
(e.g., alphabetic options). A generic list processor could be created
that looked for options in a file, performed variable substitution, and
ran the resulting command. The real difficulty is handling options that
make no sense for certain lists e.g., a RunProgram (RP) option invoked on
a WRKSPLF panel. I might attempt that in the final chapter of the book
but maybe that should be left as an exercise for the reader :)

Regards,
Simon Coulter.
