Despite my temptation I have not tackled it.  The major hassles involve
finding the size/length of host variables but there are other fun bits to
worry about.

Right you are!  Compile any SQL RPG program and ask for the listing.  You'll
see the final results of the pre-compiler's work there (but not the
machinations it went through to get there...)
