There seems to be 3 different classes of thought on the RPG cycle. 1. Use it whenever you can, it's great. 2. It has it's uses, use it when it makes sense. 3. Never use the RPG cycle, it's not good structured programming. I fall under 2. It has it's uses when it makes sense to use it. But it shouldn't be used for all programs, because in some it just doesn't make sense. The only reason I think it should be used is because that's what makes RPG RPG. RPG is starting to change and is beginning to look closer and closer to a hybrid between RPG, Pascal and C. Without the Cycle, RPG no longer exists as a distinct language. Might as well just use a C compiler then. I can write a program in 3 lines (an F spec and a C spec) to update a database file using the cycle. The same program without using the cycle takes about 5 lines (F spec, DO While, Read, End Do, Seton LR).
