Chris, My feelings about the cycle: great for input; not so great for output. Input: All the hard work is done for you. You get a record, along with a signal if it's the first of a group, and process it. If it's the last of a group you can do your end-of-group processing. No need to compare values to previous values. Output: If you want to use the cycle for output, you have to set the conditions for the output in the form of indicators. Instead of specifying something like 'update this record' you have to specify something like 'seton 31', which is slightly less clear :-) In our company we used to teach new programmers the cycle immediately. These days we first teach them to program without using the cycle (program your own level breaks, whoopee!); then show them how using the cycle simplifies their programs.
