Does anyone know of a way to get the relative record number of a
physical file, to be stored in a hidden field within a subfile as the
subfile is filled?

Yes, you put a KINFDS on the file's 'F' specs, then when you define the DS in
the "I" or "D" specs (ILE), the last information I have is that binary and in
postion 397 to 400. It may have moved but that should be in the manuals if the
position has changed, search for the FILE INFORMATION DATA STRUCTURE. After
reading the record you must z-add the binary field you have defined to a signed
numeric, this can be your hidden field on the subfile.
