Sherry...

Perhaps I don't fully undetstand the situation, but, is there
any reason why you couldn't just download these files using something
like PC support or perhaps IDEAcomm's midrange client?

(I know you can't use client access on a system that old)

I know that with the IDEAcomm software, you can do S/36 files, because
you can define a "view" of the file, telling the system which fields
are in which places...

You can then download them into a CSV formatted file (it might be
called something else, like "variable length records" or something,
depending on the software) which could be imported directly into
Excel.

I can't think of any way to do this using the tape drive. I guess
if you've got compatible drives on both the PC and the AS/400 you
COULD transfer it that way, but it'd almost DEFINITELY mean writing
custom software on the PC to interpret the files. Using File Transfer
would be a *LOT* easier.

Hope that helps...
