How frequently do you re-boot your PC?

My work laptop every 4 weeks, when new Windows updates are released.
Otherwise, it's sleeping. I do not frequently install new software on
this device, but use it to do my daily tasks. I experiment a lot of
course, but that's in virtual machines running on my testing server.

My home PC - it depends. When i'm playing games, reboots sometimes
have to be more frequent, because of updates or badly programmed
software. But i've also had it running for more than 4 weeks.

Server are always on the 4 week reboot cycle. Works great.

The only exception to this rule are 32bit terminal servers. Poorly
written applications may make more reboots necessary.

What do you do to clean up the residue?

I usually try to take a more systematic approach to issues in my work
environment. If there is an issue, i will use process monitor and
process explorer to troubleshoot it, and figure out why exactly
something isn't working.

Most of the tools for "cleaning up your pc" out there are snake oil.
Most of them don't do anything bad, but most of what they do isn't
useful either. Some even have harmful optimizations, like forcing
Windows to terminate applications instead of allowing them to shutdown
gracefully during a shutdown event.
