The address book is on the local machine. Some people have moved these to file
servers. In ND 6, these personal type files can now be kept on the domino
server.

The mail file for Lotus Notes sits on a Domino server. The server delivers mail
to this file. Archiving and Replication are two different things.
Archiving: Settings that allow you to save/archive the mail from your Mail file
into an archive file(Ok, I know don't define a word with itself). This file can
reside locally or on a file server. It is a separate file from your mail file.
It only contains the mail you have saved off.
Replication: A 'copy' of your mail file is on your local machine. Mail is
still delivered to your mail file on the server. From there it is replicated
down to your local mail file manually or at set times. This copy allow you to
work disconnected from the domino server. This copy contains the same mail that
is in the mail file on the server.
In a way, Archiving and Replication are about the same. The big difference is
that replicated mail allows you to work disconnected from the server.

In all cases these files are a .NSF(the notes file format). If you want the
info in these files in a different format, you will have to export the
information. With the address book this is quite easy. Open the address book,
select File, and then Export. Look at the Save as Types, these may have to be
played with to get the best results. The mail file is a little harder. If all
he wants is the text of the mail, then the same process as the address book can
be followed. Attachments will be lost in this case. If attachments are
important, he will have to track down a third party tool that exports the email
into some format he can use.

Actually, the question that should be asked first back to you is if your friend
is staying with Notes or are they saving the stuff off to go to some other
package???
