Try this scenario....
Plant engineers want a preventative maintenance system.
Option A - license and implement green screen based package that is
integrated with existing purchasing system.
Option B - Buy a completely new package that is not integrated.
Engineers prefer Option B.
Why?
Because it is a GUI application.
Ok. What do you need this GUI to do?
Blink. Blink. Tumbleweed passes by. Cricket chirps. Blink. Blink.
I need a GUI....I want to cut and paste.
Ok. You know you can do that with the green screen application?
Blink. Blink. I need a GUI.
Now you can start the whole discussion thread about what apps have good
GUI's and all of that but it kind of misses the main point. This was 5+
years ago and the GUI application wasn't that good. Still isn't. But
they have their GUI......

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The purchasing guy doesn't care
about
the appearance of a piece of information that tells him he needs to
order
1,263 widgets right now or the Jones order will not get shipped this
year.

And really, the web programmer *should* be making things look pretty,
and the business rules guy should be writing the code for the MRP
calcs. One of the things on the System i is that we (programmers) do
the business logic and the data access and the presentation. Which we
can do, primarily because the presentation isn't pretty. It's
functional, maybe more functional than a web page, but it's not
pretty.

In a lot management/financial types they are, because the perception
is a
System i programmer can ONLY do green screen and you are paying for
OLD
skills.
"Show me a web programmer who can discuss the calculations necessary
for
an
MRP run. I have yet to see one who could produce a balance sheet."
Agreed but again to "those in charge" it's more important to make the
results from that MRP run or balance sheet, look pretty.......
