PASE is unambiguous in itself, but PASE is a component of IBM i. Hence IBM i is not the same like IBM i when you refer to what is not PASE, where you have those fancy menus, type guessable command names and run applications "with tags on", etc. I hope this is comprehensible?

Other people bringing in the layering of LIC and "that what runs on top of LIC" don't make things easier. ;-)

Yes. But as you can see by many message IDs and even the name of the default message file qcpfmsg, the term CPF has been brought forward ever since.

While the AS/400 was in development, CPF was referred to (internally to IBM as I recall) as XPF and, when released, came out as OS/400.

So, OS/400 it is? I already see many people being upset by that term, because it reminds them too much about the AS/400 as an antique hardware platform. But then, even the FTP server in IBM i 7.3 reports back OS/400!

So, OS/400 might indeed be the correct term for "that what runs on top of LIC"?

I was at COMMON before AS/400 was announced and one of the Rochester developers, in a conversation, referred to XPF and immediately caught himself and corrected to CPF. Several of us looked at each other and he said something to the effect of "Forget you heard that".
