The SCPF job is indeed the first of the system jobs that start during IPL. Its job log is must reading along with the QSYSOPR message queue to understand how IBM i starts. When an IPL fails (or more specifically the start up) the jog log for SCPF is a first stop, where we get the AHAAA moments.

As to the references to earlier names of the OS, Dave Brown asked me a question during one of my trips to Rochester; “Do you want me spending money on fixing those messages, or on new functionality? “. So they won’t go hunting for those messages. If they happen to need a PTF where those messages exist, they will update them but not just to update the OS name where it might be imbedded in code.

You have a way of making me hunt for things.

Sorry. :-D I know I sometimes fail to contain my curiosity and strive for real answers (instead of "it has been like that ever since, so don't ask"). ;-)

I guess I'd lobby for using PASE for itself and i5/OS for what we think of as IBM i.

Sounds good to me.

BTW, there is a job named SCPF - seems to be pretty close to the job that is part of an IPL. The job log shows objects deleted from QRPLOBJ, as well as PTF objects. Others here will know whether this job name has been around since System/38 days.

I've read a 1992 book lately, "Application Development Concepts for the IBM AS/400", author names listed: Bains, Chakravarti, Cozzi. That book alleges, SCPF is short for "Start CPF", the jobs sitting on top of LIC. If this is true, my name proposal "CPF" for that environment isn't that far fetched. :-) Especially in hindsight that OS/400's predecessor was the S/38's OS. Here I use OS/400 to name the whole software package, including everything from head to toe, or from LIC to sign-on.

Good times!

Dunno, I wasn't there. :-)
