No you can't stay there, and stay current with the OS, even if you are
running the same applications.
As they move stuff to open source you'll have to learn how to do all the
patching.

I think Rob is right about this.
You have to follow your favorite packages and know when to yum update.

But Rob's point is that he had been using an application that didn't
have any open source components, and now it does. So in order to keep
using it, he has to stay on top of the open source stuff.

Rob and Jack are saying that more and more IBM i stuff, *including
existing applications*, will require open source. If they are right
(and I fully agree with them), then you cannot just blithely continue
ignoring open source, because at some point, something you depend on
now will require you to have the open source stuff installed.

You can't even count on simply avoiding updates and continuing to run
old versions of things indefinitely. Witness the issue with encryption
protocols.

The good news is that the update process for the open source stuff is
pretty easy. Actually very easy for now, while you still *can*
more-or-less pick and choose what open source you want to use.
Eventually, it may become more complicated as different vendors have
conflicting open source requirements. All the more reason to get used
to it now instead of having to dive straight into the deep end later.
