Let’s take a step back and consider what IBM is doing, essentially adding another huge value proposition for the platform.

If you love the apply PTFs and let IBM worry about drivers and compatibility, and levels, and CVEs, one could go on for some time, then all you need to do is stay in the traditional IBM i development stream and you’ll achieve your goals. Added to that a world class support organization, and even not highly technical folks can run the system. That’s the major value proposition that’s been in place for years.

With the advent of the open source packages available via ACS package management, you’ve just opened up a huge new value proposition where you don’t need to stay in the proprietary lane anymore, added to that IBM is doing the conversions for you with the quality checks, and support organization to boot. Free, no, but you pay for it in other environments too.

I get that we’ve been spoiled, but you can stay there if you wish, or add the new opportunities that open source provides.
