Hi Pete

in my experience (at least if the system is HMC managed) then I can ignore
the physical keylock position - the LPAR properties are what counts.
If I want to be sure what settings the system will use when starting, then
when I activate the LPAR I will ensure that the profile boots from the
specific profile I want, not the "current configuration" (which I think is
the default).
I will also usually specify the Manual and D options in the activate
dialogues rather than relying on the LPAR properties, just so I am sure I
am getting what I expect.

The error message indicates that the search for a valid load source was
exhausted, so that suggests to me either the image on the USB/DVD is not
what is expected, or it did not find the device on the ALT-IPL adapter you
have in the profile configuration.

Given that it didn't boot from disk and give you the other error, then it
certainly sounds like it is doing an ALT-IPL of some description so the HMC
settings are being looked at and used.

Did you go through the rigmarole of preparing the USB with the IBM tooling
to make it bootable ?
https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/new-installation-process-lic-using-usb-30-media

Since you had a DVD you burned, you could also see if that works by
reconnecting that - your problem with the DVD may have been the ALT-IPL
device selection depending on the sequence of events.

If I was in your boots what I would do is:
- Check the USB drive is formatted correctly and maybe go through the
process again with a different drive.
- Verify the adapter names and locations for my hardware, particularly the
internal adapters.
- Check the LPAR profile and verify the ALT-IPL device is correct (and
maybe check the IPL options while I'm at it)
- Remount the USB stick
- Activate the LPAR being sure to specify the profile with the ALT-IPL
adapter and also specifying D and Manual in the activation options

I realise that's what you've probably done, I am just kind of playing at
kicking it back and forth via email, I hope it's helpful.

Thanks Evan. I just finished reading an update on my case with IBM.
They were referring to someone internal about making sure that the USB
device was tagged as an alternative so I decided to check that myself.
You can check me on this but I went to the last activated profile for my
IBM i for that LPAR and looked at the tagged I/O. The load source
points to an SAS RAID Internal Adapter but there wasn't anything in the
"Alternate restart device" so I selected the P1-T3 Universal Serial Bus
UHC Spec resource as the alt and saved the profile.

So I made sure the "General Properties" reflected the IPL Source of D
and the Keylock position of Manual and then attempted to start the
LPAR. It still fails with the B2003110 LP=00001 SRC.

What is the relationship between the IPL source and keylock position in
the HMC for the LPAR and the IPL Source and keylock on the front
physical panel on the system itself? Should I manually set the system
panel on the physical server to D and manual? The display shows HMC=1
which I think means the HMC is the console, but what about the other
items that display on the LED display on the system ? Are they
important and should they be changed?

Hi Pete

are you sure that the USB drive and/or the DVD drive resources are tagged
as ALT-IPL devices ?
Worth a look in the HMC to verify that.
