History lesson: The database cross reference files first appeared in 3.1 of OS/400. On test systems with lots of small files (like test lpars with multiple library copies) the size taken up by these cross reference files was a decision factor in upgrading to 3.1. Especially in the days when disk drives were measured in megabytes. Back then most of the cross reference files were limited to the OS/400 style of naming like QSYS/QADBXREF. The more 'standard' names, like QSYS2/SYSTABLES, came out later. Most of these newer names are simply views over the older ones. Perhaps with some UDF's, etc thrown in to create some derived columns.
