Was it a direct SAN connection or NPIV?
If VIOS with the FC channel for the tape has been restarted, in 95% of the case no VARYOFF/VARYON needed. With NPIV never needed...

After a VIOS upgrade I did have to do a WRKMLBSTS and vary it off/on again.
It's not as bad as having to SST reset an IOP card or some such thing as we've experienced with IBM devices. So often I had the instructions taped to the device.
