We use EMC Data Domains here and have had a few other customers use them
in-house as well. We've been able to do complete system
migrations/bare-metal restores and anything else you'd expect to be able to
do with a drive or library with no problems. They work great with BRMS in
the environment(s) that we support.

One thing we have wanted to do is have the ability to export tapes as a
"file" so that we could take advantage of Object Storage or cloud-based
archival services as a second tier, but the way the DD de-dupe works make
this a little challenging.

IBM have been talking to us about the Protectier offering which appears to
be the same as the DSI offering (maybe re-badged or something). That is of
interest to us and we are still exploring the details.

The QuadStor thing looks interesting to me but I think it might be a
challenge to gather support for this approach in our environment,

While on the phone with BRMS support today, I mentioned that I might be
going to a VTL library.
IBM support mentioned that the only supported VTL libraries are IBM's.
Even though the 3rd party VTLs may work fine, they are not supported by
IBM.

I was seriously considering one of these 3rd party VTLs, but now I'm not
so sure on the choice.

One of the goals of the VTL was to add a 2nd library, eliminating the
daily manual tape handling to off-site storage.

Anyone in the group using non-IBM VTLs?
