I got nowhere near the idea that it would be going to browser clients. I
can't see anything that supports that idea but maybe I am just misreading
it.
Encapsulating data as JSON - or XML for that matter - just for the sake of
it seems like it would be overhead depending on what is consuming the data.
For a browser this seems like a great idea. An ETL process not so much.
I don't see anything wrong with using a layer that works for other
platforms or systems.
Anything that assists the i in participating in the data ecosystem it lives
in is a good thing in my view.
Being a data island with limited connectivity options just re-inforces the
view of being a closed system.
I try not to be too religious about stuff that works that is in use
generally unless there is a good reason.

I think it will depend rather heavily on what you are actually doing.

After reading Jay's rationale for IBM i REST web services, my take-away was
that they would be delivering JSON output directly to browser "clients".

JDBC/ODBC has its place but it depends on what you are trying to do.

Architecturally, I view jdbc/odbc as an unnecessary layer that only
benefits the platforms and language environments that require it, and the
people who are married to those platforms.
